Lessons and Teachers

 

We offer half hour (30 min) private lessons once a week for $80 or $90 per month, depending on instructor.  

Lessons are available for the following instruments: Piano, Electric Bass, Guitar, Ukulele, Banjo, Mandolin, Drums, Violin, Fiddle, Viola, Cello, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Lower Brass, and Accordion.

We have a total of 25 highly qualified teachers, each specializing in a specific instrument, and 15 studios to accommodate them.

CANDY ANDERSON teaches FLUTE, CLARINET and VIOLIN. She been teaching both the clarinet and flute since 1986 and has studied violin since 1987. She has a Bachelor's degree from CSUS and has played in the Gold Country Orchestra, as well as the SCC & Cosumnes orchestras and various folk/dance music ensembles. Candy studied flute with Dale DeWald and Edna Camenchero. She learned to play the clarinet from her father, Russell Walter Kline and her violin studies have been with Gilda Taffet, Michael Neumann, Ward Finley, and Lisa Lawson.

MIKE BOBO has been teaching PIANO here at Kline Music since 1976. He has studied music at schools in both the U.S. and in Europe. He enjoys all types of music and teaches jazz, classical, and popular style. While students of all ages are welcome, younger beginners should be at least 7-8yrs old. Apart from teaching, Mike also performs locally with numerous groups, as well as his own jazz combo. The most frequent comment he hears is:" I wish my mother hadn't let me quit piano lessons when I was young."

Student turnover is very low and any new applicants may be put on a waiting list.

JEREMY BOLT has been teaching BRASS players of all levels since 1991. His individualized approach, teaching philosophy, and broad musical background help nurture the “whole” musician. Jeremy holds a B.M. from Berklee College of Music where he was awarded both the Berklee Winds Scholarship for performance and the Peter Kaleta Scholarship for composition. A specialist in the Broadway musical, Jeremy has performed in over 35 pit orchestras, and has served as musical director for productions on both coasts of the USA. He is currently the lead trumpet and horn arranger/transcriber for Chicago Tribute Authority, based in Sacramento. Jeremy teaches ALL BRASS instruments.

DAVE CHELINI teaches ACCORDION. He has played music professionally for over 35 years. He studied music under Frank Impinna of Frank & Dolores Studio in Carmichael, CA, and Joe Neronde in Sacramento. Dave also established a combo that played in the Sacramento area for 21 years. He served on the board of directors for the Northen California Accordion Association (1975-79), and is currently a member of the Northern California Accordion Society and the Golden State Accordion Club. Dave began teaching at Kline Music in 1966 and later continued from home. In 2003, after a 20 year break, he returned to the store, and is now offering lessons to all ages with a positive direction toward enjoying the accordion. LAURA CORREIA has been playing the PIANO for over 27 years and has been teaching for a little over 12 years. Learning through private lessons, Laura studied music in college with an emphasis in music history. She developed an interest in music at a young age; her mother played piano and organ so Laura was constantly surrounded by music. Her love of performance was groomed by her first piano teacher who organized regular piano recitals. Throughout her highschool and college years, Laura, performed in choir, musicals and plays. Teaching has always been a dream for her, and she has developed a patience for children by being the oldest of 6 kids.

TONNY DEY has been playing DRUMS for 48 years and teaching for 25 years. He has toured the world with major stars like Linda Ronstadt, Mike Bloomfield, Van Morrison and is one of Sacramento's most in demand drummers. Tony teaches a wide range of styles including Jazz, Swing, Rock, Funk, Country, Reggae, Zydeco, Cajun, Blues, R&B, Brazilian and Salsa. His method of teaching employs a rich catalogue of musical rudiments, proper technique and the reading of drum notation.

REYLYNN GOESSLING teaches VIOLIN. She graduated from CSUS with a Bachelor's of Music Performance and a Bachelor's of Arts in Humanities in 2001. She has performed with the CSUS Symphony as assistant concert mistress and in various Opera Orchestras as well as chamber ensembles. She has played with the Solano Symphony, the Apollo Symphony and the Stockton symphony. Currently, she is playing as Assistant Concert Mistress Camellia Symphony.

AIKO HAMAGUCHI studied at the Kochi University in Japan and has 27 years of experience playing classical PIANO. She has been Director of the Children's Choir at Hamaguchi Music School in Japan and she has also taught piano, vocal and tutored in music theory at Sacramento City College. Her students range from beginning to intermediate and she accepts children as well as adults. Aiko's main objective is to help students excel in a higher level of art with an emphasis on classical music.

EMILY KOLLARS teaches PIANO to children and adults at Kline Music. Her passion for music stems from 13 years of classical piano training, as well as formal vocal study. She holds a Bachelors degree from Sarah Lawrence College in New York, where she immersed herself in jazz studies and songwriting. Along with teaching, she also works as a piano accompanist, as a solo jazz artist and cantor for numerous church communities in the Sacramento area. Her approach to teaching encompasses music theory, technique and expression tailored to the individual student.

DAVE JOHNSON has over thirty-five years of experience as a professional musician and educator in ALL BRASS instruments. He keeps in high demand as a freelance trumpeter in the Sacramento area. Dave currently performs regularly with Sister Swing, The Rhythm Vandals, Funkengruven, Elk Grove First Baptist Church, The Creole Jazz Kings, Atomic Jump Revival, and the High Class Brass Big Band. Mr. Johnson has held former trumpet chairs for the Wooden Nickel Jass Band, The Horn Dawgs horn section, The Mikes Torres Band, The Coasters and The Drifters while touring North America. He holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Trumpet Performance from CSUS and is currently teaching private lessons on woodwinds and brass. In addition, he is teaching band in the Elk Grove area and is the Director of Youth Bands for the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society. Mr. Johnson also works as a freelance composer, arranger, clinician, and recording artist. Some of Dave Johnson's recording credit include: The San Francisco Forty Niners Professional Football team, Mick Martin, the Blues Rockers, Sister Swing, Creole Jazz Kings, and the Wooden Nickel Jass Band to name a few.
JEANNE JOHNSON has been playing GUITAR for years. She studied guitar locally with Gilda Taffett, Susan Scangarella and Marc Teicholz of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Dr. Ivan Olson and Walter Kerfoot of the American gave her a solid foundation in music theory. She also studied the Suzuki Method for the guitar with Frank Longay and uses it to instruct students who are interested in this method. "A student can begin playing the guitar as early as age 6 or 7, or enjoy taking up this instrument at any stage of life." As a private teacher, Jeanne offers an approach to music that helps ensure immediate success-- this helps build student enthusiasm for the instrument and motivation to practice. Lessons are tailored to each student's musical goals and personal abilities. She focuses on proper technique and incorporates note reading, scales, and chord theory into lessons from the start to create a foundation for more challenging music. The advantage of private lessons is that each student can work at his or her own pace.

PETER KETT, British born, emigrated to the U.S. in 1978 after a yearly stint of playing in the Paris Metro, a French rock band, and collecting addresses and phone numbers of American tourists. He has been playing GUITAR for over thirty years and teaching for twenty. In the mid-eighties he played in the British folk/rock duo Back to Front, and also with The Lunatic Fringe. He has three A.A. music degrees (Theory, Performance, and Songwriting) from SCC and is one recital short of a B.A. in music composition from CSUS with a minor in Classical Guitar which he hopes to complete in the near future. Pete teaches most styles but is particularly adept at folk, rock, blues and instrumental acoustic fingerpicking. He presently plays nylon string guitar and melodica with local world music group Fantacea. Pete also teaches beginning to intermediate ELECTRIC BASS.

KENNY MANLAPIG has been playing GUITAR for over 30 years, and teaching and performing professionally for over 21 years. He has taught at various music stores- however, since 1995, Kline Music has been his home. In 1997, he earned a AA degree in music from Sacramento City College, graduating with honors. His twenty-plus years experience as a working musician includes performances at clubs throughout California and Hawaii. In 1997, he performed at the Monterey Blues Festival, and in 2001 he performed at the International Pop Overthrow music festivals in Hollywood. Recently, he's been playing guitar for different musical productions around Sacramento, including Woody Guthrie's American Song and Jesus Christ, Superstar. In October '04, he lent his talents to a production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Besides performing live, Kenny has also recorded 3 CDs with different groups (two of which are available at Kline Music). For the 1999-00 and 2000-01 NBA seasons, he wrote and recorded the Sacramento Kings' Arco Arena introduction music. For the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons, his music was used for the Kings' radio broadcasts. He is currently the guitar player and worship team leader at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and School, where he also teaches guitar. Kenny has taught students of all ages, although he has had more success with students eight years of age and older. If you and/or your child wants to learn to play the guitar, he can help. "Remember, learning to play a musical instrument requires a long term commitment and regular practice (1/2 hour per day). GABRIEL NELSON teaches ELECTRIC BASS and GUITAR. He has played since he was 11 years old. Although Gabriel never had any formal lessons he learned and developed his musicianship by performing and asking questions along the way, his fellow musicians were quite helpful with this. Through his high school years he studied music theory and played bass in the jazz ensemble, directed by Ike Paget. After graduation he began playing local gigs in Sacramento with many different bands, until 1992 when he joined Cake. From that point forward he has toured the United States and abroad several times as well as performed on the band's platinum selling albums. Gabriel incorporates an emphasis on the basics of melody, rhythm, harmony, music arrangement, reading music, music theory, proper technic and ear training, along with teaching his students songs they want to learn.

DAVID SHAPIRO teaches GUITAR (all styles except Flamenco), UKE, DOBRO, LAP STEEL, ELECTRIC BASS, BANJO and MANDOLIN. He studied liberal arts at the University of Maryland and has a B.A. in Composition from the Berklee College of Music. Steve Miller, Huey Lewis, Bonnie Raitt, Norton Buffalo, Maria Muldaur, Peter Rowan, Taj Mahal, Dan Hicks, Tower of Power, members of the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan, Tony Rice and Bela Fleck are just some of the artists who David has played or recorded with. He is also an arranger and songwriter, and was the creative advisor and arranger for Suspex Records in Sausalito for many years. He has performed with the Modesto & Cameilia symphonies.

KATHLEEN POE has taught PIANO at Kline Music for over 10 years. She earned her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, studying with Mack McCray at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, as well as with Gene Savage and Richard Cionco at CSUS. She earned her Masters in Music Composition, studying with Leo Eglar. Her work, "Expressions for String Orchestra" was premiered by the CSUS Symphony in 1998. Kathleen has performed extensively in the Bay Area as well as in Sacramento. She has performed as a pianist with the Monterey Symphony, Gold Country Chamber Orchestra, California Youth Symphony and CSUS Symphony. She has also played for Music Circus, Davis Musical Theater Company, CSUS Opera Theater, and many other performing groups. Kathleen divides her time between Kline Music and Sacramento City College, where she teaches piano classes, music appreciation, and performance classes.

REGGY MARKS was born and raised in New York City and he studied music at Hunter College (NYC). Reggy was in the military where he played in the 1 st Air Force Band for 3 years. He has performed on the saxophone and the flute with many fine musicians, including Smokey Robinson, George Benson, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave (Soul Man), Jimmy McGriff, Tito Puente, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Cal Tjader. He currently plays with Mumbo Gumbo and the Nibblers as well as other players when called upon. Reggy tailors his teaching of the SAXOPHONE and the FLUTE to the individual student. He teaches beginning to advanced players where he enjoys teaching improvisation of jazz, rock, latin and other genres.

DAN POOL has been teaching PIANO for over 20 years and playing for over 35 years. He has a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Sacramento State University. Dan became interested in the piano at a very young age and now, apart from teaching, he also is a piano accompanist. He has 20 years of experience in theater as a pianist and conductor, has played with Music Circus and is currently the accompanist for the SCC choir and music director for the ARC theater. Dan has taught children ages from 4 to 18 but he is willing to teach all ages.

MARIKO ROSS teaches SAXOPHONE and has been playing for 14 years and teaching privately for 10 years.  She holds a Masters of Music in Saxophone Performance from the University of Oregon, where she studied with Dr. Idit Shner and Steve Owen, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from California State University, East Bay where she studied with Daniel Zinn. While at the University of Oregon, Mariko was the Graduate Teaching Fellow for the UO Saxophone Studio (2007-2009) and received the Outstanding Graduate Performer in Woodwinds Award in 2009.  She also performed regularly with the Oregon Jazz Ensemble, Eugene Contemporary Chamber Ensemble and the Ross Saxophone Quartet, which competed in the prestigious Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition and the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in the spring of 2009.  Mariko welcomes students of all ages and skill levels in both classical and jazz idioms, and focuses her lessons on technique, tone and the personal interests of the student. Mariko also teaches beginning CLARINETand FLUTE.

NICK MEAGHER has played PIANO for over 19 years. His studies include classical training under Louise Savage. In addition to teaching, Nick puts his piano skills to work as an accompanist for choirs, combos and soloists. Other musical adventures include choral singing and drums.
HOLLY HARRISON is excited to be teaching beginning to advanced VIOLA and beginning VIOLIN at Kline Music! Holly received her Master's degree in viola performance from Sacramento State and earned her BA at UC Davis in music history. As a freelance violist, Holly performs with the North State Symphony in Chico and Redding, is principal violist of both the Townsend Opera Orchestra in Modesto and the All Hallows Academy Orchestra in Sacramento, and has performed frequently with the Sacramento Choral Society Orchestra.Holly taught with the Sacramento State String Project for three years. There she gained significant experience working with beginning violin and cello students in large and small groups and on an individual level. Through her work in the string project she has attended the American String Teachers Association National Conference for the past three years and is currently a member of ASTA. Holly has studied the Suzuki Method for violin and viola and attempts to infuse her teaching with elements of the Suzuki School including attention to beautiful tone, active listening, and creating a positive learning environment for ages 4 to 64 (and beyond).

KRYSTYNA TAYLOR was born in 1980 on the sandy beaches of Santa Barbara. She began studying the CELLO at the ripe old age of 11 years old. Krystyna received a full scholarship to attend CSU, Sacramento and majored in cello performance where she graduated in 2005. She taught numerous after-school orchestra programs in both the San Juan and Sacramento Unified School Districts for five years before opening up her private studio for beginning to intermediate VIOLIN and VIOLA, and beginning to advanced CELLO students. In addition to teaching full-time, Krystyna also does studio session work and has played on over 30 albums with artists such as Autumn Sky, Jackie Greene, David Houston, Deluxe, Jay Shainer, Die, Sister Crayon, Kyoto Beat Orchestra, Daisy Spot and many others. She currently plays with Exquisite Corps. In 2007, Krystyna founded and conducts the K Street Orchestra, which is a late-starters orchestra that is geared towards beginning adults wanting to play in an orchestra but at a beginning level. In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with her cat, Snowball, and her much loved husband of many years.

VICKI COCHRAN teaches SAXOPHONE, CLARINET, and PIANO. Vicki has over 35 years experience as a professional musician and a teacher of music, and has taught at Kline Music for over six years. Vicki has studied with a variety of professional musicians including Frealon Bibbons, principal clarinet of the San Francisco Symphony, and David Breedon of the San Francisco Symphony and various Bay Area jazz groups. She has been a member of the Sacramento Symphony, the Camellia Symphony, the Sacramento Music Circus and the CSUS Faculty Woodwind Quintet. Vicki tailors her teaching for the individual student, whether they are headed for the symphony or want to play for their own enjoyment. She offers an approach which helps build student enthusiasm for their instrument and motivation to practice. Past students have achieved high placement in school auditions and have been featured as soloist with their school bands. In addition to teaching individuals, Vicki has also taught woodwinds at CSUS, band and ensemble groups at the Natomas Charter School as the Artist in Residence, and taught band at Sacramento Waldorf School.

LIZ BARTON (PIANO, FRENCH HORN, TRUMPET, TROMBONE)

LIZ BARTON has been playing PIANO for almost 30 years and the FRENCH HORN since age 11. She performs on both instruments as a professional freelance musician throughout Northern California. As a pianist, Liz performs weekly on piano and organ for many church services and events at All Hallows and St. Peters churches. Recent engagements on the french horn, include principal horn with the North State Symphony and All Hallows Orchestra, as well as performances with the Fresno Philharmonic and Merced Symphony. Liz holds a Master of Music degree in music performance from Sacramento State and has many years of private teaching experience. As an educator, she focuses on developing the complete musician with attention to the goals of each individual student.  All ages and levels are welcome! Liz teaches PIANO and FRENCH HORN from beginners to advanced. She teaches beginning to intermediate TRUMPET and TROMBONE.
