In collaboration with Maori cultural artist Sam Mangakahia, Kala presents “The Voyage Collection”— unique pieces of native Maori artwork. Sam has been telling stories through his art for 13 years and has created over 450 custom art pieces that each have a story. Each of the designs/stories focus on specific human experiences we all share in common — Unity, Courage, Resliance, Resourcefulness, and Guidance— designed with natural elements that speak powerfully to these experiences. The artwork is laser-etched on mahogany and each ukulele comes with a personalized Voyage Collection gig bag, and story card hang tag telling the unique message of each piece of art.
Comes with Voyage Collection Gig Bag.
UNITY: This Maori-inspired design represents connection and unity.
The hibiscus flowers in this design are intertwined with fern leaves (“koru” in Maori). The koru is a significant Maori symbol representing many essential things in life, including the bond between loved ones. The hibiscus flower has a vital role in this piece, representing beauty and grace. As you continue life's journey, this design is a reminder to give grace to yourself and others. As you do this, you will create trust and unity with the people around you.
GUIDANCE: Sharing and receiving are essential parts of life's voyage.
In Polynesia, sea turtles can be known as spiritual guardians ('aumakua). As you acquire knowledge and advice from guardians in your life, it can be a source of direction and hope. Likewise, as you progress on your journey, you can inspire others by sharing your talents.
COURAGE: Within this wave are symbols of courage and strength.
From the time of birth, you are constantly facing new opportunities and trials. It takes courage to face new challenges and hardships. But as you utilize the strength within yourself and your ancestors, you can overcome these challenges. Throughout this journey of discovery, you will gain confidence in yourself.
Resourceful • koki’o kea (Ko-kee-o kay-ah): White Hawaiian Hibiscus
This incredible plant serves as a reminder to be resourceful and to utilize all of our available resources to uplift others around us.
This design is inspired by an endemic species called Hibiscus arnottianus, also known as Koki’o kea (Ko-kee-o kay-ah) in Hawaiian, and more commonly understood as the White Hawaiian Hibiscus in English. This flower has three subspecies that vary in look and shape and has many uses, both ancient and modern. The Koki’o kea was used for adornment in lei making and for medicinal purposes. For example, the bud was used in conjunction with the bark of the taproot to detoxify the body, and the stem was used to create cordage for a variety of uses on land and at sea. This variety of hibiscus is native to the moist and wet forests of the mountains of Moloka’i and O’ahu.
Resilient • Nā’ū (Na-hoo): Gardenia brighamii
The Nā’ū has been a resource to express creativity and art. Its resilient nature can remind us to never give up on our passions despite the many challenges we will face.
This design is inspired by the endemic and endangered plant of Hawaii, commonly know as Nā’ū in Hawaiian with only ten wild gardenia brighamii left. The species can be found on Maui, Moloka’i, Lana’i, Hawai’i, and O’ahu. This flower holds a rich history, with its flowers traditionally used for crafting flower leis, its stems used to create Kapa cloth, and its fruits utilized as natural dyes. This remarkable flower not only provides precious resources and adornment but has also survived through the decades. Despite its endangered status, dedicated conservation efforts have been made to revive the resilient species.
