Vocal Lessons
Dr. Kathleen O'Rourke, DMA
Dr. Kathleen O'Rourke [Dr. O’] inspires others to perform music using an upbeat, encouraging and non-judgmental environment. Born in Des Moines, Iowa and educated in New York City, Dr. O’ earned both her Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA) and Masters in Music (MM) from SUNY: Stony Brook and her Bachelor’s in Music (BM) from Barnard College [Columbia University].
Dr. O’ incorporates movement and exploration into her lesson plans- fostering creativity and depth of expression in her students:
“The initial emphasis in our weekly coaching time is on developing stronger sight-reading skills, acquiring a basic understanding of technique, and cultivating a keen sense of musicianship. Students are assigned a weekly sight-reading assignment as well as repertoire-specific tasks which encompass the review and acquisition of notes and rhythms from the assigned repertoire. For advanced students, once songs are memorized, the focus moves to performance practice. Major emphasis is given to engaging the imagination while maintaining a solid technique rich with artistic inflection.”
In addition to teaching private singing and piano lessons at Kline’s Music (Sacramento), Dr. O’ is also an Artist-in-Residence at CLARA [E. Claire Raley Studios for the Performing Arts; (Sacramento)]. She is a member of the Capitol Chorale Choir (led by Dr. Jones) and the Chanteuses Choir (led by Mr. Zinn). Dr. O’ has performed locally with Hummingbird Theater Company as Christine in scenes from The Phantom of the Opera. She is a soprano soloist regularly at the Pioneer UCC Church.
When not teaching or performing, Dr. O’ enjoys gigging as a substitute teacher for SCUSD. She dabbles in master gardening and abstract painting. She enjoys writing her own music and cooking new recipes.
