Quality Turkish Reed Ney Flute - Re
The Ney is a legendary flute which has been used in traditional ceremonies and hymns by Sufis, yet more recently became popular in many different music genres. Ney is traditionally made from bamboo in different lengths, which determine the Ney's chord. Each different type of Ney is named according to the chord it produces. All Turkish Ney types have six finger holes in the front and one thumb hole in the back, which are skillfully drilled with a clef. It's carefully hand-made and designed by master craftsmen to produce a uniquely soft, mystical tone.
Traditional Ney consists of three main parts; The body, which is made of reed and has nine nodes with seven finger holes - six in the front and one in the back for the thumb. Good quality reed should be dense, in a light yellow color and medium thickness, which can affect the range of tones. The nodes themselves also decrease in length and width which changes the air flow.
The mouthpiece attached on top of the Ney is called ‘Başpare’ (baspare), and traditionally made of buffalo horn, ivory or ebony.
The final key element of the Ney is the metal wire which is called ‘Parazvaane’, usually made of copper or silver, and wrapped around the cuttings for protection and longevity. It is essential to maintain a safe handling of the Ney as it is made mostly from organic material and considered very delicate. The Ney is quite sensitive to moisture, extreme temperature and humidity. It is recommended to always play with a clean mouth and leave in a well-ventilated area after playing.
